aloka

Aloka is, at its core, a story about roots. For founder, Monik Ladha, it was an embrace of home–in many senses of the word: a reconnection to his cultural home of India to see his grandmother (dadi) regularly and his entry into his family’s former commercial home in the interiors industry.

Much of the spirit of aloka is rooted in the family lessons and “little proverbs” Monik learned as a child; lessons of remaining mindful and aware of oneself, respecting others, nature, and our earth, and being, almost neurotically, considerate of one’s waste. It is that frame of mind that guides aloka to seek potential in both existing and new materials, making them with care and consideration for craft and the planet.

Their unique line of repurposed quilts and pillows are all made from recycled saris. Salvaged then softened, the vintage quilts (between 60-90 years old) are over-dyed in a custom color range and then accented with original block print designs. Each piece requires patience and an understanding of its capacity to be refreshed into something new again.
